Why Did Some Believe That Trolls Ate People

I believe I recall a mythology about trolls that live under bridges to eat people that travel over them.  I believe that this stems from tales told regarding the dangers of homeless people who are known for avoiding the harshness of natures elements.  A bridge would and did shelter the homeless from rain, sleet, snow, and heat.
