The Divine Witness Argument
The Divine Witness Argument
By Michael Haimes
Premise 1: If God exists and is omniscient, then all actions—public and private—are witnessed by God.
Premise 2: It is morally wrong to expose a perfect, all-seeing being to unnecessary evil.
Premise 3: Every act of cruelty, injustice, or selfishness is not only an injury to others, but a burden inflicted upon the One who sees all.
Premise 4: Just as we shield children or innocents from trauma, we should act to shield God from unnecessary human evil.
Premise 5: Moral behavior becomes not only about justice, but about love and respect toward the divine witness.
Conclusion:
The presence of a perfect divine witness deepens our moral responsibility. To live rightly is to spare God pain—and to honor the sacred nature of being seen.
